Sod Installation in Guelph

Skip the wait — a lush, established-looking lawn the same day it goes down. New builds, damaged areas, or a full replacement.

Sod gives you a finished lawn in an afternoon: no waiting for germination, no bare patches, no mud tracked into the house for six weeks. It is the right answer for new-build yards that came with a thin layer of topsoil over graded clay, for lawns a dog or a pool install has wrecked, and for anyone who needs curb appeal before a listing photo.

What separates sod that thrives from sod that browns out in a month is everything underneath it. A Cut Above handles the full job — removal, grading, soil, laying, rolling and the watering plan — so the roots actually knit into your ground.

Our sod installation process

Removal of existing dead turf, weeds and debris
Grading for drainage away from the foundation and levelling of low spots
Topsoil or triple mix added where the existing soil is thin or heavy clay
Fresh-cut Ontario sod delivered and laid the same day, seams staggered and tight
Edges trimmed cleanly to beds, walkways and driveways
Rolled for soil contact, first watering done, written establishment schedule
💡 Pro tip: Sod should be laid within 24 hours of being cut. We schedule delivery to match the install day — never let rolls sit on a pallet in the sun over a weekend.

What makes sod take — or fail

The roll itself is rarely the problem; the soil under it is. Sod laid over compacted builder’s clay roots an inch deep, dries out in the first heat wave and peels back like carpet. We loosen and amend the base so roots can push down, grade it so water drains rather than pools, and roll the finished lawn so every square is in full contact with the soil beneath it.

The first three weeks

New sod needs water every day for the first one to two weeks — enough that the soil under the roll is moist, not just the surface. By week two you can do the tug test: gently lift a corner, and if it resists, the roots have taken. Taper watering to every second or third day, then to a normal deep-and-infrequent schedule. First mow happens around two to three weeks in, at three inches, once the sod is firmly rooted and the ground is dry enough to walk on without sinking.

Guelph’s watering bylaw restricts lawn watering by address day and time window; the City has historically offered permits for new lawn establishment. We will flag the current rules when we book your install.

Best time to sod in Guelph

Late spring and early fall are the sweet spots — mild air, warm soil, and natural rain doing some of the watering. Early September is our favourite window. Midsummer installs work but demand strict watering; late fall is risky because the sod needs a few weeks of root growth before the ground freezes.

Common Questions

Sod or seed — which is better for my Guelph lawn?
Sod for speed, slopes, new builds and pre-sale curb appeal; seed for lower cost, deeper long-term rooting and repairs. We offer both and will recommend honestly — for a lot of repair jobs, seed is the better spend.
Can you sod over my existing lawn?
No — and anyone who offers to is setting you up for failure. Old turf has to come out and the soil has to be prepared, or the new sod never roots properly.
How long until I can walk on new sod?
Keep traffic off for about two weeks while it roots. Light foot traffic is fine after the tug test passes; hold off on heavy use, furniture and dogs for a month.
How much does sod installation cost in Guelph?
It is priced by area, plus any grading and soil work the site needs. Quotes are free and come back within 24 hours of a site look.
