How to Fix a Patchy Lawn in Guelph (Diagnose First, Then Repair)
Every week someone asks us to "just throw some seed down" on a patchy lawn. We can — but if you don’t fix what killed the grass in the first place, the same patches come back next summer. Diagnosis takes five minutes and changes the entire repair plan.
Read the patch: a quick field guide
- Patch lifts up like loose carpet, often with birds or skunks digging — white C-shaped grubs are eating the roots. Common across Guelph in late summer.
- Round spots with dark green rings around them — dog urine. Concentrated nitrogen burns the centre, feeds the edge.
- Thin, mossy grass under trees — shade plus root competition. Grass genetics are the fix (shade blend), not more fertilizer.
- Straw-brown from mid-July, whole areas at once, bounces back after rain — summer dormancy, not death. Normal for unirrigated Guelph lawns.
- Thin strips along driveways and sidewalks — salt damage from winter plus reflected heat. Flush with water in spring, overseed with salt-tolerant mix.
- Patches where soil is rock-hard — compaction. Seed won’t take until it’s aerated.
The repair sequence that actually works
Once the cause is handled, the repair is the same everywhere: rake out the dead material, loosen the top inch of soil (or core-aerate the whole lawn if compaction is widespread), add a thin layer of quality topsoil or triple mix, seed with a blend that matches the conditions, and keep it damp until it establishes.
Timing matters more than technique. In Guelph, early September gives the best take rates by a wide margin — warm soil, cooling air, and fall rains do the watering for you. Spring works; July is a waste of seed.
When to call us instead
If patches keep returning, the lawn is more thin than thick, or grubs have done real damage, a season plan of aeration, overseeding and feeding rebuilds a lawn faster — and usually cheaper — than repeated spot repairs. We’ll tell you honestly if your lawn just needs one fix.
