A garden bed is the difference between a house with a lawn and a property with curb appeal. It is also the place where most DIY money gets lost — plants chosen for the tag at the garden centre rather than the spot they are going into, planted too deep, and left to fend for themselves through the first summer.
We source plant stock directly from Connon Nurseries, one of Ontario’s top growers, match it to your sun, soil and style, and handle everything from bed prep to the mulch ring and the watering schedule for the first season.
What's Included
Right plant, right place
Guelph sits in hardiness zone 5, which rules out a surprising amount of what big-box stores sell in May. We lean on proven performers — hydrangeas, boxwood, spirea, ninebark, ornamental grasses, hostas for the shade, coneflower and black-eyed Susan for the sun — plus native and pollinator-friendly options for homeowners who want beds that look after themselves. The goal is a bed that looks better in year three than it did on install day, not one that needs replacing.
Planted properly, or not at all
The most common planting mistake is depth: a shrub set even a couple of inches too deep slowly suffocates and fails a year or two later, long after anyone connects the dots. We set the root flare at grade, loosen circling roots, backfill with amended soil, water deeply to settle it, and finish with a mulch ring kept clear of the stem. Spacing is based on the plant’s mature size, so beds fill in rather than becoming a thicket that needs ripping out.
Pairing planting with the rest of the bed
Planting is usually one visit in a bigger refresh: old, tired shrubs out, bed re-edged, weeds cleared by hand, new plants in, then a fresh two to three inches of mulch across the whole bed. Booking it as one job means everything happens in the right order and the bed looks finished the day we leave.
