The Complete Spring Lawn Care Checklist for Guelph Homes

1. Wait for the ground to firm up

Nothing on this list should happen while the soil is saturated. Foot traffic and equipment on soggy turf cause compaction that lasts the whole season. In Guelph that usually means holding off until mid-to-late April.

2. Spring cleanup

Rake or blow out leaves, branches and winter grit (Guelph road sand ends up surprisingly deep into front lawns). Rake matted, grey patches of dead grass while you’re at it — snow mould thrives under matted turf, and opening it up lets the crowns breathe and regrow.

3. First cut at the right height

4. Overseed thin areas

Spring overseeding works if you get seed down early enough to establish before summer heat. Rough up bare patches, seed, and keep them consistently damp. For whole-lawn thickening we usually recommend waiting for early September — germination rates are dramatically better.

5. Fertilize once the lawn is actively growing

Late May into early June is the spring window here — after the natural spring flush, not before. Feeding too early pushes soft top-growth the lawn can’t sustain.

6. Edge, mulch and reset the beds

A crisp spade edge and a fresh 2–3 inches of mulch does more for curb appeal than anything else on this list, and mulched beds hold moisture through summer while suppressing weeds.

What not to do in spring

• Do not dethatch or aerate while the ground is soggy — you will tear the lawn and smear the soil. Wait for it to firm up.
• Do not roll the lawn to “flatten bumps.” Rolling compacts Guelph’s clay soils, which is the opposite of what they need. Fix bumps with topdressing.
• Do not reach for a weed-and-feed product. The herbicides in them are not sold here under Ontario’s cosmetic pesticide rules; the ones that are left are mostly a tax on hope. Thick grass is the weed control.
• Do not fertilize before the lawn is actively growing. Feeding a lawn that has not woken up feeds the weeds that have.

The Guelph-specific job: the salt and sand strip

Walk any front lawn in April and you will find a dead strip along the sidewalk and road: winter salt spray plus the sand the plows throw. Rake out the sand (it makes great fill for potholes, not lawns), flush the strip with a deep watering or two once the soil thaws to push salt below the root zone, then overseed it with a salt-tolerant blend heavy on perennial ryegrass and fine fescue. Re-seeding the boulevard every spring is normal in Guelph; expecting it to survive the winter untouched is not.

If you only do a few things

One thing: a proper cleanup and the first cut at the right height. That alone puts you ahead of half the street. Two things: add overseeding on the thin and bare spots while the soil is cool and damp. Three things: feed the lawn in late May once it is growing hard. Everything else — mulch, edging, planting — is about the beds looking finished rather than the lawn being healthy, and can follow as budget allows.

A realistic spring calendar for Guelph

• Early to mid April: wait. Walk the lawn, not the mower.
• Late April: cleanup, rake out snow mould, first cut when the grass hits 4 inches.
• Early May: overseed thin areas and the salt strip; keep new seed damp.
• Mid to late May: edge and mulch the beds; plant shrubs and perennials.
• Late May to early June: first fertilizer application of the year, watered in.
