Why We Mow at 3 Inches (And Your Lawn Will Thank You)

Taller grass grows deeper roots

Root depth roughly mirrors blade height. A lawn shaved to 1.5 inches is living off the top few centimetres of soil — the first part to dry out in a Guelph summer. At 3 inches, roots reach deeper moisture and the lawn shrugs off dry stretches that flatten shorter turf.

Shade is free weed control

Crabgrass and most broadleaf weeds need sunlight hitting bare soil to germinate. A dense 3-inch canopy shades the soil surface, keeps it cooler, and chokes out weed seedlings before you ever see them. Since Ontario’s cosmetic pesticide rules took the strong herbicides off the table, mowing height genuinely is one of the most powerful weed controls left.

It looks better, longer

A short-cut lawn looks "done" for a day, then exposes every bump, seam and dry patch. A 3-inch cut has a thick, carpeted look that holds its colour and stripes cleanly. Combined with the one-third rule, it also means the lawn never has that just-scalped, yellowed look after a visit.

What turf research consistently finds

This is not a house opinion. University turfgrass programs across the cool-season belt — Ontario, Michigan, the northeastern states — land on the same range for Kentucky bluegrass, fescue and ryegrass home lawns: 2.5 to 3.5 inches, and toward the high end of that in summer heat. The mechanism is simple. Leaf area drives photosynthesis, photosynthesis drives root growth, and root depth decides whether a lawn survives a dry July without irrigation. Cut the leaf short and the plant keeps itself alive by shrinking its roots.

The exceptions, honestly listed

• The final cut of the season drops to about 2.5 inches so the turf does not mat under snow and feed snow mould.
• The first spring cut can go slightly higher than normal if the lawn came out of winter matted — open it up, then bring it down over two cuts.
• Newly seeded areas get their first cut at 3 to 4 inches tall, then join the normal schedule.
• Fine-textured ornamental turf (think golf-green bentgrass) is a different plant grown a different way. Almost nobody in Guelph has it as a home lawn.

Setting your own mower to 3 inches

Deck numbers lie — a “3” on one mower is a “2.5” on another. Park the mower on a flat driveway, measure from the pavement to the blade edge with a tape, and adjust until you read three inches. Most homeowner mowers are shipped set one or two notches lower than that, which is why so many lawns get buzzed without anyone deciding to do it.

What you will notice after one season

Fewer crabgrass and dandelion seedlings, because the soil surface stays shaded and cool. A lawn that stays green a week or two longer into a dry spell than the neighbours’. Less watering to get the same colour. And a thicker, more carpet-like look, because the grass is putting energy into tillers and roots instead of racing to regrow leaf it just lost.
